Diabetes and You

Diabetes and You is a highly-recommended, free and fun group session delivered by specially-trained health professionals for groups of people newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or who haven’t been to a previous session. It consists of two 2-hour sessions, held on consecutive weeks in local community venues.

In session 1, you’ll focus on understanding diabetes and managing the condition through diet, exercise and medication. A trained dietician will also talk with your group about how different foods and foodstuffs affect your glucose levels.

In session 2, you’ll focus on managing your condition through annual screening, along with essential advice on diabetes and driving, holidays, insurances and blood glucose monitoring. The dietician will discuss weight management, cholesterol and blood pressure. And a podiatrist will discuss diabetes and foot care with the group.

Diabetes and More

Diabetes and More is a follow-on session aimed at those who have already attended the Diabetes and You group session and takes place around a year later. It consists of two 2-hour sessions, held on consecutive weeks in local community venues.

In session 1, your group will recap the Diabetes and You group session, and focus on exercise, managing blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as dealing with any side-effects of medication. A dietician discusses different Types of carbohydrates, portion sizes, the benefits of weight loss, and helps you set some goals.

In session 2, your group will work together on how to manage the impacts of diabetes during typical activities, like going on holiday or attending a special occasion. The dietician discusses how foods affect your cholesterol, and how to read food labels, and a podiatrist recaps the importance of foot care.
