New measures in general practice to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus in Lancashire and South Cumbria

GP practices in Lancashire and South Cumbria have implemented new local measures on the use of face masks and coverings to help protect patients, the public and to help maintain services.

Across Lancashire and South Cumbria, the NHS has agreed a position to require the use of face masks or face coverings in general practice settings. This is a local decision to help protect public and staff and is not national Public Health England (PHE) guidance.

As part of the measures, visitors and patients coming to general practice will need to wear face coverings to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus to other patients and staff. 

Patients are being encouraged to bring their own face coverings, which can be made of cloth and be reusable in line with government guidance. Face coverings worn as part of religious beliefs or cultural practice are also acceptable, providing they are not loose and cover the mouth and nose. People who do not bring a face covering with them when attending their GP surgery will be provided with one on arrival.
